The new Rusian fab could be interesting. Not because it is super advanced or goping to take over the world, they are a fat ten years behind now and when the fab is up to speed they will be only five years behind. More intersting to see is how they do it. If you have ever visited any Rusian industrial site you know why they are ten years behind. The oficial five-year planning is long gone but quality control and production maintenance is still going on as if the five-year cycle is still running.

I am always intersted in the deeper details of technology. Stuff like busses and slots just interst me. I just start to hate TheIquirere for being to shalow and not adding links. Lucky though they drop keywords and references that, with juts a little more effort than a plain link gets you to the tastier details.

ARM against Intel. An,d I have no real doubt that ARM is in a much better position to compete. Not just because it has a huge market share and tons of partners. It has a huge number of the programmers of the embeded market on it's side. Intel can argue that, with the x86 isa it has more developers but few of them know what embeded programs mean, they know about widgets and icons and buttons but interupts are foreign to the x86 crowds.

Moving the iPhone from ARM to Intel sounds reasonable in a software world. And the Intel chips no doubt are capable enough. But they still need to much power now and the next generation, while better is still to hungry. The one after that should be good enough. But if Apple waits and holds off development for that it's platform will seem dated and lacking in applications. If Apple goes with Intel soon it risks getting a "nice but unusable" immage caused by short battery endurance.

I hate it when users thank me.
I don't mind them being nice and polite. But when they send that by mail it's iritating.
The problem is I do support so I work interrup-driven. When a phone rings I drop what I am doing and take it. When a mail drops in I drop what I am doing (unless I am on the phone) and handle it. So when a mail with thanks comes in I drop my work ... for nothing. Grrr.

Google qnd IBM spending on universities is good news. But I wonder why other companies don't do and advertise the same way. It's all good and well to sponsor a sportsteam but the return is low. By investing in -independent- research you get a good measurable return and a positive immage.

An artificial is not a break-trough but if successfull it does put down a milesone. I don't think it's a breaktrough because genetic manipulation has been done before, it's just shifting the scale. It's also something everybody knew was going to happen, just another step on the road we are going. And it's a long road. The "artificial bacterium" in the title is misleading. Reading it trough I think "adding some genes to a bacterium" sounds more like it. I am not minimising the feat even though I might sound so. It's a great achievement, probably Nobel wothy.
Also typical for scinetific advancements is a bunch of people crying faul. Cause it can be used in bio-warfare, and it can be used by terrorists and it needs more regulation and ... . I wonder what happend the day man started using fire? Were there world-wide protetst and calls for governement regulation then?

DeviceVM does it right, putting the OS in BIOS where it belongs. It's about time we get the OS back there. I remember the old Commodore64, the computer was ready even before the screen was warmed up enough to show an immage. Same with the old MACs. Sure there are limits

Damn. I got to hack into the transport system cause one of the transport people wanted a change to his user-settings. The "Damn" is because the request to change was passed from one of the transport IT-team members to me. It are their users, on their system, for gods sake.
 
And then I had to hack into the communications system. Just to convert an error-list (paper) into an error-email.
I could have used our own emial setup program but L explicitly asked to use the one from Comms.

The new Asus sub-notes look good. And having Linux as primary OS looks even better. But somehow they shoot right beside the target. For simple jobs that don't need much space most people prefer a mobile-phone sized thing, like the iPhone or Nokia 95. Those can do most of the things users need and they run rather longer than a meager two hours. More complicated jobs that warant a bigger screen and typable keyboard typicaly require more storage and system memory. And cruialy more working time.
I would pick it up immediatlt if it had a bigger disk (say 20GB or more) and a bigger batery (say around 8h). And external USB disk is possible and an extra plug-in or connectable batery may work as well and combined they bring the think up to spec. But it is all extra clutter that kills the idea of a small extra portable device.

What I realy want is 8h battery, 1GHz level, 1GB mem, 20Gb disk and 9" SVGA screen. I guess I will keep waiting for my dream toy.

Green cities in America. Using LEDs for lighting is a smart move but I would have expected it to appear earliest in places like Japan and Europe where higher energy prices provide a faster pay-off and greater acceptance. Yep. Ships are a main source of polution. A lot can be done to reduce the maritime polution with only a minor impact on prices. But none of those measures have a good political sound, you cann't score with it. So politics will drive transport costs though the roof. If not tomorrow then wnext election year. RAID-0 is very good for speeing up data access. But with external disks like this it's more marketing than effectiveness. Even a slow disk is held up by the USB interface. I guess the Firewire800 is a better interface but then again few PCs have that on board.

Toshiba bringing out an XBox360 playing drive? I don't think there would be any technical dificulties in doing it but I wonder what MS has to gain by allowing Toshiba to do this. OK, it is still losing money on the hardware so offloading that and raking in a licence fee may sound good breaking up the XBox brand recognition may cost dearly.

IMAP has it's uses and has become more usefull as well. But I think POP3 is here to stay. Definitly for private mail.

Electro-Magnetic Puls weapon? The internet killing bomb? OK, it's not likely to be used as an effective military weapon. But as a terroroist tool it just might be effective, even though it's unlikely because of the inefficiency. A high investment coupled to a low impact and low media garbbing ability means it's an unlikely weapon. Anyway, converting to optical connections sounds good.

While WHOIS contains valuable information it's openness is a problem. I only have three domains and pretty unnotewothy ones at that and yet I do receive real paper mail a couple of times a year warning me to pay up registration fees. They all come from America so complaining is useless. All I can do is pass on the mail to my Belgian registrar.

We have a printer in the office with a 500page tray. You can feed a whole ream at once. Yet most people take just a small stack, some 20 or 30 pages to feed it. And then they wonder why the priter is always beeping and asking for paper. IT users sometimes are the worst.
